[ Summary ] Intestinal obstruction and ileus are states where the movement of gastrointestinal the tract contents is disturbed, due to various causes. As basic treatments, fasting, intraveneous fluids, alimentary tract decompression, parenteral nutrition, and antibiotic medications are recommended. Intraveneous fluids and nasogastric suction are mentioned as the first steps in general management of ileus. However, some patients are transferred to the hospital in a state of shock. In those cases initial treatment should be applied for shock. Bearing in mind that it is necessary to decide whether surgical treatment is required as soon as possible, one must manage ileus. The medical treatment for dehydration is replacement of water which moves as a component digestive juices, while keeping in mind that excess hydration may cause heart failure. If alimentary duct decompression is not performed effectively, the patients general condition may worsen.
