[ Summary ] The major etiologic agents for acute enteritis are rotavirus, norovirus, sapovirus, enteric adenovirus and astrovirus. Mortality caused by rotavirus diarrhea is an important problem in developing countries, however, there is a high morbidity rate in developed countries. In addition to children, adults and the elderly are also infected. Food borne and human to human infection are recognized in addition to sporadic cases of unknown etiology. Quick tests, using immunochromatography and genetic diagnosis by RT-PCR and real time PCR are used for diagnosis. There is no specific therapy for each virus and only supplemental therapy is used. Now a vaccine has been developed for rotavirus infection.
