[ Summary ] Enzymes in pancreas juice and bile acids may damage the gastric mucosa, so gastritis in remnant stomachs has been thought to be caused by gastro-duodenal reflux. We showed that denervation of the stomach leads to cell proliferation of the mucosa and gastritis. Recently, we observed that an almost equal ratio (about 75%) of the patients who had gastrectomies were infected with Helicobacter pylori as in the normal population, Therefor Helicobacter pylori may cause gastritis in remnant stomachs. The cause of gastritis in remnant stomachs is so complex that therapy for this disease should be selected according to particular mechanism. Operational procedures which aim to presearve postoperative stomach function, such as pylorus preseaving gastrectomies, may diminish the occurrence of gastritis of remnant stomachs.
