[ Summary ] The term chronic gastritis in Japan involves symptomatic gastritis, morphological gastritis and functional gastritis. Symptomatic gastritis and functional dyspepsia (FD) are considered as belonging in the same category. Studies concerning chronic gastritis revealed that FD, morphological gastritis, abnormal motility/perception or psychosocial disorders were connected. Accordingly, in Japan "chronic gastritis" has been reported from various points of view.
In the future, if the term of FD will become widely recognized in our country, symptomatic gastritis should be substituted for FD. Functional gastritis will be accepted in Japan as a term which explains its own pathology, such as a functional disorder or an abnormal perception "chronic gastritis" will be used in Japan in connection with morphological (pathological) gastritis.
