[ Summary ] So-called "chronic gastritis" include histopathological gastritis, endoscopic gastritis and symptomatic gastritis, therefore, exact descriptions of this condition are now in a state of confusion. In western countries, symptomatic gastritis has recently been separated from other forms of this condition and has been termed non ulcer dyspepsia (NUD) or functional dyspepsia (FD). However, in Japan, it is still described using the former term.
The "Sydney System" was published in 1991 as a new classification for chronic gastritis. This paper discusses how to use this system to eliminate this confused state of affairs.
Up to this time, the pathological division of the Sydney system has frequently been used and has proven satisfactiory, but the endoscopic division of categories is still incomplete and is not useful. For better utilization it is necessary to clarify the meaning of each endoscopic finding in relation to the "Sydney System" and to consider the relationships between histological findings and symptoms.
