[ Summary ] The results are presented from two hospital based epidemiological studies conducted at Aichi Cancer Center, on the association between smoking and alcohol consumption habits and gastric cancer. Smoking increased the risk of gastric cancer, but the strength of the risk differed by subsite, and age of diagnosis. Alcohol drinking did not by itself appear to be associated strongly with gastric cancer, but increased the risk in association with smoking. From these results, it is suggested that smoking and drinking are associated with gastric cancer, either by interaction with each other or with other gastric cancer risk factors.
