[ Summary ] A segregation analysis of Japanese gastric cancer did not exclude the presence of Mendelian transmitted genetic factors interacting with environmental factors, which contributed to familial occurence. So called candidate genes such as Cyp450s and repair genes were not associated with gastric cancer, but modified the risk of smoking and other environmental risks. In particular, the occurrence of gastric cancer in familial cancer syndrome would also help in discovering a new candidate for polymorphism. Risk assessment should be performed based on particular "sub" entities of gastric cancer as in the case of "tailor-made" therapies for cancer.
