[ Summary ] Although it has been reported that the number of NSAID ulcers has been increasing in western countries, the epidemiology and prevention of this type of peptic ulcer have not been fully studied in Japan. Recently, the "Guideline for Treatment of Gastric Ulcers" has been published in Japan. Based on the data described in the guideline, at present the use of misoprostol, protonpump inhibitors, or high doses of H2 receptor antagonists is recommended in the prevention of NSAID ulcers. Since only few randomized placebo-controlled studies on this subject have been performed in Japan, further studies will be required in the future.
