[ Summary ] By using a molecule such as that found in a gene, a protein, an enzyme or a metabolite as biomarker, any study that examines ?scientifically functionality of food in digestive tract disease will be successful in producing positive economic results. To prevent digestive tract diseases, it is necessary to develop a method to diagnose the pre-disease stage or high risk groups associated with these disease. For a search method, we used genomic, proteomic, or metabolomic approaches, employing GeneChips, SELDI-TOF-MS, and LC-MS. In this report, we discussed the present situation and the future of functional food science in relation to digestive tract diseases.
