[ Summary ] Gastroesophageal reflux disease is a state caused by the reflux of gastric contents into the esophagus, resulting in damage to the esophageal mucosa, with subjective symptom(s) that in some way interfere with patients' daily activities. In order to understand the pathology of gastroesophageal reflux disease, it is essential to study its three possible causes : (1) anti-reflux mechanisms, (2) exposure of the esophageal mucosa to irritating gastric contents, and (3) esophageal motor functions.
