[ Summary ] Gastroesophageal acid reflux is the cause of many symptoms, such as heartburn, acid regurgitation, swallowing difficulties, and retrosternal pain. Previous reports showed that the prevalence of reflux-esophagitis in Japan was low. However, recent studies have demonstrated that the prevalence is as high as that in Western countries, which is about 15%. Heartburn, is a typical symptom of reflux esophagitis, which is most commonly related to endoscopic findings. About 30% of the population suffers from heartburn. On the other hand, Barrett's esophagus, a serious result of esophagitis is still rare in Japan.
