[ Summary ] In Europe and the United States various types of stents, each designed for a specific purpose, are available for the treatment of gastro-duodenal stenosis and their efficacy has been reported. In this country, however, stents designed for specific uses are not yet available and the esophageal stents must be used for other purposes. Thus, some innovation has been necessary when they must be retained in the body. At our hospital, a rigid tube is attached to the manual side of the delivery system to extend the latter. To retain the stent in the deeper section of the duodenum, a long over-tube is employed and pressure can often be manually eliminated. However, in cases having a sharp curvatures or in "stent in stent" cases, force greater than that required in an ordinary case of an indwelling stent must be applied to the end of the delivery system. To solve this problem, the tip of the delivery system is removed and the latter is installed at the end of an endoscope. It has already been established that a satisfactory result can be obtained with an indwelling gastro-intestinal stent. It is earnestly desired that stents designed for specific purposes become available soon in this country.
