[ Summary ] Tumors of the biliary tract commonly disturb the excretion of bile juice, causing dilation of the bile duct. US and MRCP are therefore useful for screening the patients with symptoms such as jaundice.
In identifying a radiolucent shadows within the bile duct, ERCP was superior to MRCP. However, MRCP also showed a radiolucent shadow over 3 mm in size within the bile duct, and stenosis of the duct. Moreover, in detecting pre-stenotic dilation of the duct, MRCP was superior to ERCP.
MRCP is therefore expected to add a new dimention in the early diagnosis of tumors of the biliary tract without symptoms.
