[ Summary ] Although several pathophysiologic factors such as gastric acid, visceral sensation, gastrointestinal motility and psychosocial factors, such as stress, may play roles in the pathogenesis of non-ulcer dyspepsia (NUD), the exact pathogenesis of dyspepsia remains unknown. Gastrointestinal dysmotility has been reported as one of the major pathogenetic factors in patients with NUD. In previous studies, impaired fasting gastric motility, delayed gastric emptying, decreased antral contractions, gastric dysrhythumias, increased duodenogastric reflux and impaired accommodation of the proximal stomach were seen in about 30 to 50% of NUD patients. In this review, we describe details concerning motility disorders in patients with NUD.
