[ Summary ] It is generally accepted that preoperative EUS for early colorectal carcinoma is useful in invasion depth diagnosis, especially when making distinctions between m or sm1 cancer and sm2-3 cancer. But, there are some potential problems, such as the presence of cases with only unreadable EUS findings and difficulties in the differentiated diagnosis between submucosal cancer invasion and fibrosis only.
EUS findings of the blood vessels below tumors and in injected submucosa are informative in with the safe EMR. As for metastatic diagnosis to lymph nodes, EUS is not accurate at the present time. However, although 3D-EUS is promising on several levels, we can not vouch for its clinical efficacy at this time.
