[ Summary ] The evidence concerning treatment for superficial esophageal cancer is almost exclusively from retro spective non-experimental studies, therefore a strict comparison between operations, EMR and radiotherapy is difficult. However, those cases that are not clearly ones of lymph node metastasis are good candidates for radiotherapy treatment.
Long term specific survival rates related to submicosal cancer are almost equal for those treated with operative therapy or radiotherapy. In the future, cases that are difficult to treat will receive non-resective treatment and surgery when absolutely necessary.
Therefore, an investigation of therapies used should be discussed in terms of depth of invasion, lymph node metastasis and vessel development. In addition, the relationship between this type of cancer and multiple primary cancer is an important problem that must be delt with.
