[ Summary ] Mucosal cancer, which is resectable in one piece is an appropriate lesion for EMR treatment, and if repetitive EMR is easily performed in one session, multiple esophageal tumorous lesions are also indicated for EMR treatment. Although the range of relative indications for EMR in superficial esophageal cancer is wider than that for gastric or colonic EMR, indications are dependant on the skills of the endoscopist. In the application for EMR for superficial esophageal cancer an endoscopist should have basic endoscopic skills, precise diagnostic ability, sufficient knowledge of the background of each method and a good practical technique as well as management ability for intra-and post-operative complications, and an understanding of appropriate management strategies for the patient according to the histological findings from the resected specimen. Esophageal EMR is a very useful therapeutic tool which can support insuffient diagnostic accuracy and provide the most precise diagnostic information on all lesions.
