[ Summary ] This article discusses the relationships between such diseases as gastric carcinoma, gastric ulcers and duodenal ulcers, in relation to dietary habits and Helicobacter pylori (HP), by reviewing recent reports. It has been widely recognized, in numerous reports, that dietary habits are closely related to gastric carcinoma. It is also recognized that HP increases the risk of gastric carcinoma, gastric ulcers and duodenal ulcers. There are many unsolved issues, however, such as the reasons why the percentage of ulcers appearing in those who have HP is in a low percentage range, as is the rate of progress from infection with HP to the appearance of ulcers. We described the generally accepted opinions in respect to these issues, including the application of eradication.
