[ Summary ] Question "What number of hepatocellular carcinoma cases can be treated with local percutaneous treatments?" is difficult to answer. The objective data on this subject is poor, but the 15th annual report by the Liver Cancer Study Group of Japan suggests some answers. In ethanol injection therapy, microwave coagulation therapy and radio frequency ablation therapy, treatment cases with 1 or 2 tumors account for more than 90% of cases. The number of cases having three or more tumors declined sharply. In addition, as the number of tumor cases increased in ethanol injection therapy, the survival rate becames worse.
One important factor in choosing correct treatment is knowing the number of tumors. It is very important to select a therapy that can improve the prognosis after having performed CTA/CTAP.
