[ Summary ] Recently, it has been reported that the frequency of accidents associated with ERCP is about 0.1%. Among these accidents, the rate of acute pancreatitis is the highest. The results of recent research reported the rate to be 80%, with the remaining are 5% being related to cholangitis and perforations. It is thought that acute pancreatitis after ERCP may be termed "injection pancreatitis" or "post-ERCP pancreatitis (PEAP)". Although the PEAP rate differs in various reports, it is reported that the rate is between 1 to 10%. Precautionary measures to prevent accidents, including PEAP, include the proper selection of indications, possible precautionary treatment, skill in technique, and proper treatment after ERCP. In case an accident occurs in spite of the best care, it is important to prevent serious complications.
