[ Summary ] Common complications during upper GI endoscopy are bleeding and perforations during panendoscopy and related to pancreatitis during side-view duodenoscopy.
Bleeding is often observed along the pharyngo-esophageal junction, the esophago-gastric junction and between the first and second portion of the duodenum. The most important perforation is caused by uncareful insertion of the endoscope when passing through the esophageal orifice. The treatment of first choice for this perforation is open surgery to prevent severe mediastinitis. Gastric perforation is rare. Duodenal perforation during EUS is also an indication for open surgery.
Gastroenterological endoscopy is an invasive procedure. There is a need for sufficient informed consent before this procedure.
