[ Summary ] Cleansing the bowel canal before colonoscopy is an indispensable procedure to prepare for this procedure. Premedication is helpful before total colonoscopy to reduce pain and discomfort.
In this paper, several important cases of complications due to preparation and premedication were quoted from various literature. Side effects from medicines for preparation and premedication were discussed as well as methods to avoid severe complications. Although it is necessary for the endoscopist to have sufficient previous knowledge of these medications and to establish standards for their use for themselves, much more attention should be paid to confirming the history and the present state of patients in relation to decisions on administration of these medications. Careful observation is also necessary for endoscopists to find early signs of side effects during examinations after administration of agents for premedication.
