| [ Summary ] | The chances to observe esophageal hiatal hernias are increasing during stomach cancer detection survies, as the Japanese body type nears that of Western people. Proper treatment is needed when a patient with an esophageal hiatal hernia is examined. Esophageal hiatal hernias are classified in to three types: the sliding type/the para-esophagus type/and the mixed type, but the sliding type is most often seen. Those patients who are more in need of the treatment are those that have severe reflux esophagitis and/or carcinoma. Though most patients are easily treated with pharmacotherapy, by using proton pump in hibitors (PPI), there are cases where it becomes necessary to perform operations for treatment of reflux. Surgical treatments have become less aggressive with the introduction of laparoscopic operations. | |
