[ Summary ] Proton pump inhibitors have been shown to be effective for the treatment of acid-related gastrointestinal disorders but, the safety of prolonged acid suppression with proton pump inhibitors has not been established. Proton pump inhibitors have been reported to be safe and effective for long-term management of reflux esophagitis, NSAID-induced peptic ulcers, refractory peptic ulcer disease, and Zollinger-Ellison syndrome. The safety of proton pump inhibitors, given for prolonged periods, especially in patients with hypochlorhydria, needs to be more thoroughly evaluated.
