[ Summary ] Because esophageal manometry is the only method which directly measures lower esophageal sphincter pressure, it is regarded as the gold standard method of assessment of esophageal function. There are two methods of producing these measurments. One is the infused catheter method, the other is the intraluminal microtransducer method. There are advantages and disadvantages to each method. The infused catheter method is better when investigating the lower esophageal sphincter. The intraluminal microtransducer method is the superior method for extended examinations.
