[ Summary ] Nagasako et al., Iida et al., and Katsumata et al. have made attempts to simplify and improve the diagnostic criteria for ischemic colitis in Japan on the basis of the criteria proposed by Williams et al. in 1975.
Comprehensive diagnosis of ischemic colitis should be made by using the diagnostic criteria consisting of essential factors, excluding infectious colitis and antibiotic-induced hemorrhagic colitis. These diagnoses should also be made using specific endoscopic, radiolographic, and histopathologic findings.
The typical age at onset, the sites affected and classic symptoms have not always been displayed clinically in all cases of ischemic colitis. These factors should be added to the diagnostic criteria as subordinate factors.
