[ Summary ] | Ischemic enterocolitis develops from a chronic pre-iscemic state and is triggered by various vascular and intestinal factors. Those triggers, particularly purgatives and colonoscopy, are discussed based on a review of the literature. The other triggers discussed include low flow states, oral contraceptives, vascular surgery, abdominal injury, constipation, enema, intestinal stenosis, intestinal flora, food, stress, and irritable bowel syndrome. Although the mechanism of ischemic enterocolitis remains unknown, it may be possible in the future to elucidate it by accumulating cases of known etiology and eliciting possible triggers through in-depth medical interviews. |
