[ Summary ] We studied the clinical features of one hundred thirty three cases of ischemic colitis, treated in our center from January 1994 to September 2001.
It has been emphasized that ischemic colitis has a close relation with cardiovascular disorders, for example shock, cardiac failure, hypertension, diabetes mellitus, etc. However, our results suggest that ischemic colitis increased with intraluminal pressure in the colon as well as cardiovascular disorders.
The results of an experimental study of the pathogenesis of ischemic colitis were as follows 1) Various ischemic changes in the colon, similar to human ischemic colitis, could be produced in rats by ligation of the mesenteric vessels and/or closure of the anal canal. 2) These results seemed to suggest that in the pathogenesis of ischemic colitis an important role is played by the relationship between intraluminal pressure in the colon and the blood flow in the colonic wall.
