[ Summary ] We compared papillary functioning in post-EST and post-EPBD patients, using our own data and previously reported data. As a result, preservation of papillary functioning was considered not to be complete, but remained somewhat reduced, even after EPBD. However, preservation was more successful in EPBD patients than in EST patients. It has not been elucidated whether or not such preservation provides clinical benefits. However, it might be clinically benefitial for the prevention of later complications, such as cholecys titis or recurrent common bile duct stones.
