[ Summary ] Of 632 patients for whom we performed endoscopic sphincterotomy (EST), 26 (4. 1%) had complications, including hemorrhaging in 13 (2.1%), cholangitis in 7 (1.1%), pancreatitis in 4 (0.6%), cholecystitis in 1 (0.2%) and basket impaction in 1 (0.2%). There were no patients with duodenal parforations or death due to EST. This may represent the benefits associated with use of long-nose papillotome. Only one patient required an operation for hemorrhaging, but other patients were treated conservatively and with endoscopic procedures. The recognition of the fact that a particular patient may be at high risk for complications may prompt the endoscopists to be especially careful. To provide for the occurrence of complications, endoscopists should receive good training and develop endoscopic skills.
