[ Summary ] A retrospective study was done, to determine whether the prognosis score (scoring of severity of acute pancreatitis based on the criteria of the Ministry of Health and Welfare of Japan), APACHE II scores and SIRS scores on admission can predict the deterioration associated with acute pancreatitis. The severely effected group, with MOF on course, had higher scores than those not in the MOF group or the mild group in relation to prognosis scores and APACHE II scores. In addition, the serum levels of humoral mediator (IL-6,8,PMNE) on admission (in the severe group) showed higher levels than those in the mild group. Inflammatory cytokines and PMNE seem to be useful markers of severity and predictors of deterioration in acute pancreatitis.
