[ Summary ] Since the treatment of Helicobacter pylori infection is becoming common in Japan, the diagnosis of this infection has been very important. Five diagnostic methods are recommended in the Helicobacter treatment guidelines of the Japanese Research Association for Helicobacter pylori. They are the culture method, histological examination, rapid urease test, the urea breath test and antibody measurements. Each method has good points and weak points. The best way of getting a correct diagnosis is by using more than one test at a time.
