[ Summary ] Eradication therapy for Helicobacter pylori infection in patients with gastric or duodenal ulcers was approved in November, 2000 under the Japanese health insurance system.
Before this approval, the Japanese guidelines for "Diagnosis and Treatment of H.pylori infection" were made by the guideline committee of the Japanese Society for Helicobacter Research and released in the Journal Supplement in July, 2000. Indications for H.pylori eradication therapy were classified into three groups: A) Recommended: gastric and duodenal ulcers, B) Recommended and managed at specialized institutions : low-grade gastric mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue lymphoma, C) Current studies of the significance of this therapy following endoscopic mucosal resection of early gastric cancer and gastric surgery for gastric cancers, hyperplasic gastric polyps, atrophic gastritis, and nonulcer dyspepsia.
