[ Summary ] Emergence of knowledge on diverse molecules functioning in cells has enabled us to develop drugs which are a priori designed to modulate their functions. Treatment using this type of drugs is now referred to as "target-based therapy". Various molecules have been reported as a candidate for drugs used in "target-based therapy" and some are now in phase III clinical trials. However, in the development of these drugs, many problems remain to be solved. Current trends in drug development for "target-based therapy" and methodological problems in basic research for "target-based therapy" were discussed.
