[ Summary ] Patients infected with HIV have opportunistic infections involving the liver, including viral hepatitis such as HCV. They may also experience drug induced liver damage, although HIV may involve the liver directly. Progress with HAART and therapy for opportunistic infections has improved the prognosis for patients infected with HIV. HCV infection has become an important factor in the prognosis for patients infected with HIV.
