[ Summary ] Recently, methods of treatment for submucosal tumors (SMT) of the stomach have been rapidly developed by using endoluminal-endoscopic techniques and laparoscopic surgical techniques. Indications for endoluminal-endoscopic resection and lapa roscopic resection are a small SMT, limited to the submucosal layer and an SMT smaller than 5cm in diameter, respectively. Traditional open surgery is indicated for an SMT larger than 5cm in diameter. Laparoscopic procedures consist of the lesion lifting method, intragastric mucosal resection, transgastro stomal endoscopic resection, and laparoscopically-guided partial resection. Indications and surgical technique for each procedure are evaluated.
