[ Summary ] The general concept of gastrointestinal submucosal tumors was changed greatly by the revelation of the origin of gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GIST). The mechanism of GIST formation is revealed by the presence of c-kit genomic mutations. However, we can not explain the malignant behavior or, metastatic qualities on c-kit genetic mutation only. Because abnormalities in the p53 gene, the INK4 family gene, telomerase associated gene are also involved in GIST. As in other malignant tumors, many kinds of genetic abnormalities may induce the complicated biological behavior of GIST, with their ability for multipotential differentiation.
