[ Summary ] A variable stiffness colonoscope is suitable for the two-men method, in which the scope is inserted with looping at the sigmoid colon.
At the sigmoid colon, the scope was set in the soft mode and inserted by using the pushing technique. After undoing the loop and straightening the sigmoid colon, the scope should be changed to the hard mode. Changing scope-stiffness makes it easy to insert the scope into the proximal colon by preventing the sigmoid colon from re-looping and the transverse colon from hanging down.
Changing scope-stiffness must be done when the sigmoid colon is straightened. If you feel any unusual resistance with the scope or the patient complains of strong abdominal pain, the scope must be softened quickly to avoid complications.
