| [ Summary ] | A liver removed at the time of liver transplantation for familial amyloid polynueropathy can be used as a graft for sequential (domino) liver transplantation. The recipients of domino transplants have the possibility of the onset of FAP within one or two dacades. Therefore, in Europe or the USA, older recipients with a low priority for obtaining liver grafts from ordinary brain dead donors (those with hepatic malignancies or virus-originated liver cirrhosis) are usually chosen. However, in Japan, domino transplants can be considered to be a palliative procedure, to save younger patients with critical end stage liver diseases, because there is a high possibility of them dying while on the list for cadaveric transplantation, because there is quite a limited number of available donors. | |
