[ Summary ] The hemoglobin index (IHb) is correlated with mucosal hemoglobin concentrations. It is thought that a high IHb is related to mucosal redness, associated with chronic gastritis and H.pylori infection. The aim of the present study was to estimate the value of IHb in detecting H.pylori infection. We investigated the IHb of 36 patients, 18 who tested positive for H.pylori infection, and another 18 who were negative. The sensitivity was 83% specificity was 56% and the accuracy rate was 69%. The cut off index for IHb is 57. Thus, we conclude that the diagnosis of H.pylori infection using the IHb will be possible in the near future.
