[ Summary ] Appropriate management of ulcerative colitis first requires determination of its clinical activity. The activity of this condition can be evaluated by classification of its clinical severity, by activity indices, such as Seo's complex integrated disease activity index and the simple clinical colitis activity index, and/or by endoscopic activity classification. In this report, we reviewed the above-mentioned indices and classifications. A typical case of severe ulcerative colitis was also briefly described.
