[ Summary ] While sphincter preserving operations for lower rectal cancer, have decreased the incidence of stoma patients, there have been increased problems with anal dysfunction. Bowel frequency, incomplete evacuation, and soiling can reduce the quality of life in sphincter-preserved patients. Colonic J-pouch operations are effective in reducing anal dysfunction problems in very low anterior resection. Procedures or indications for pouch operations are under investigation. Anal dysfunction after hemorrhoidal or fistulal operations is treated through surgery or biofeedback training.
