[ Summary ] In recent years, self-expandable metallic stents have been widely used. They are sometimes difficult to insert in cases of long or difficult stenosis, axial deviation of the esophagus and long cardiac stenosis. When the stenosis is in the antrum or in the second portion of the duodenum, insertion is also difficult, because of warping of the delivery system. A long semi-hard tube is useful in preventing warping. Careful determination of stent placement is needed for patients with cancerous stenosis in the cervical esophagus, or those with recurrent nerve palcy, or with esophago-bronchial fistula, or cardiac stenosis. Performing percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy, along with stenting leads to prolonging of home stays.
