[ Summary ] The two patterns of fat deposition exist ; one being macrovesicular, the other microvesicular. The hepatocytes do not display significant degeneration in the former but they exhibit degeneration, leading to hepatocellular necrosis, in the latter. Fatty liver is provoked by a variety of causes, obesity and diabetes being commonest among them. The obestic/diabetic lesions are characterized by macrovesicular fat deposition, vacuolic nuclei of hepatocytes and dense fibrosis. Consplcuous irregular regeneration, which is the histological expression of genetic instability leading to hepatocarcinogenesis, is not recognized in this type of lesion.
