[ Summary ] Generally, anticholinergics and antidiarrheal agents are used for diarrhea-predominant IBS. Saline cathartics are used for constipation predominant IBS, and trimebutine maleate is used for the alternating type of IBS. Anxiolytics and antidepressants are often effective for treatment of IBS, accompanied by anxiety and depression. Calcium polycarbophil a calcium salt of polyacrylic acid, has been used in the United States, and will be used in Japan this year. Furthermore, alosetron hydrochloride, 5-HT3 antagonist, is now in clinical use in the United States and has been found to be effective for female diarrhea predominant IBS. In addition, HTF919, partial agonist for 5-HT4 receptor, is effective for constipation predominant IBS and is now in clinical trials in the United States and Europe.
