[ Summary ] | The majority of patients with irritable bowel syndrome(IBS) also experience psychiatric disturbances, most commonly depression. The diagnosis of depression depends on the existence of sleep disturbance appetite loss, weight loss, anxiety, diminished interest in life and loss of energy. On the first visit, empathy should be provided, as would be the case for a "somatic disease", caused by a functional, gastroin testinal abnormality. An adequate degree of psychosomatic therapy, paying attention to psychiatric disturbances is required. Otherwise, patients with IBS may visit a succession of other psysicians and their recovery may be delayed. Some patients with IBS seem to have such iatrogenic background. Appropriate diagnosis and therapy are required for patients with IBS as is frequently seen both in general practice and gastroenterological practice. As demonstrated in Europe and America, the number of IBS patients with histories of abuse may increase in Japan also. |
