[ Summary ] In Japan, a four week administration of interferon is the standard mode of treatment for patients with chronic hepatitis B. However, the results of this treatment are no different than the seroconversion rates for patients who follow a natural course. Therefore, we studies a twenty four week administration of interferon and confirmed improvements in seroconversion rates and ALT normalization, compared with the natural course. It was seen as an appropriate way to improve prognoses. We experimented with a fifty week administration in cases where a twenty four week administration had proven ineffective and found improvements in effectiveness. However, an increased risk of side effects was also seen. Follow-ups needed to be done carefully.
