[ Summary ] Endoscopic ultrasonography (EUS) demonstrates detailed ultrasonograms of the bilio-pancreatic system in addition to the digestive tract wall. Therefore, EUS is currently playing the main role in the staging of carcinoma of the papilla of Vater. By EUS, pancreatic invasion and duodenal involvement are diagnosed based on the correlation of a tumor echo and those of the pancreatic parenchyma and the duodenal wall. The former is diagnosed precisely regardless of the stage. The latter is also evaluated accurately by EUS, although it is sometimes difficult to determine the degree in patients at an early stage.Combination of intraductal sonography, which is considered to be accurate in determining the duodenal invasion, with EUS will improve the accuracy in staging carcinoma of the papilla of Vater.
