[ Summary ] It has been almost 2O years since the use of endoscopic ultrasonography began. Over 700 articles on EUS have been published in recent years, and active clinical research has been continuing to expand its potential benefits. In this chapter, four advanced instruments are described, they are ; 1) Slim EUS, 2) Catheter type probe development, 3) 3D reconstruction technique, 4) Electrical scanning EUS developments.Rapid progress has been made in the development of echoendoscopes, which were first used in clinical medicine in the 1980's through repeated discussion between developers and physicians. These echoendoscopes are now among the most essential tools for management of gastrointestinal and bilio-pancreatic disease. Recent progress in development of echoendoscopes appears to have gone in four directions ; 1) thinning of dedicated echoendoscopes, 2) development of thin ultrasonic probes, 3) three-dimensional endoscopic ultrasonography (EUS), and 4) development of echoendoscopes for EUS-guided punctures. In this chapter, we introduce newly developed instruments in each of these fields, and discuss progress in diagnosis and several clinical problems to be solved.
