[ Summary ] 5-aminolevulinic acid (5-ALA) is a precursor in the heme biosynthetic pathway, from which protoporphyrin-IX(Pp-IX) is derived. This is a tumor-localizing photosensitizer for photodynamic therapy of cancer patients. Within four hours from time of i.v.-injection or oral administration, it is possible to easily find the Pp-IX red fluorescence emission from the limited brain tumors by using a blue light and it is possible to excise the tumor tissues during an operation.
Unfortunately, although it is not yet possible to introduce the positive fluorescence-diagnosis into the endoscopic diagnosis using the 5-ALA, it will be useful to introduce the 5-ALA-derived Pp-IX fluorescence method into endoscopic diagnosis.
I will be introduce you to the 5-ALA-derived Pp-IX fluorescence method, especially, the fluorescence spectroscopic properties and their applications for endoscopic diagnosis in this chapter.
